Colin Dobbyne — Founder, Extreme Expedition Tours

My connection with Tanzania began almost two decades ago — not as a tourist, but as an engineer volunteering expertise for a charity project at KCMC Hospital in Kilimanjaro. Our mission was to introduce modern keyhole surgical procedures to one of Tanzania's leading hospitals, replacing open surgery with techniques that carried far less risk, pain and recovery time for patients.

The project was a profound success. Keyhole surgery is now standard practice at KCMC, the procedures have spread across East Africa, and the work was recognised internationally — including by the British Medical Journal. KCMC is today a centre of excellence, and thousands of Tanzanians have benefited from what began as a small, determined volunteer effort.

But Tanzania gave me something in return that I never expected. The landscapes, the wildlife, the cultures and the sheer, unhurried beauty of the natural world captured something in me that has never let go. What began as a humanitarian mission became a life's passion — and eventually, Extreme Expedition Tours.

Every safari I create is driven by that same conviction that brought me to Tanzania in the first place — that when you give something of yourself to a place, it gives something extraordinary back. My mission is to share that experience with every traveller who joins us — to introduce them to a spiritual connection with life, our planet and the natural world, and to send them home a little happier and a little better for having been here.

When we dream of a safari holiday, we imagine ourselves being transported to a bygone age, immersed in the heart of Africa, leisurely exploring the sunlit savannah plains where distant horizons meet clear blue skies, and where the thrill of adventure lies in the unpredictability of each new day. We are lured by the magic of the savannah that promises to blend the hot and dusty excitement of the day, with serene moments of reflection at night, as we cosy up around the campfire in the cool evening air, wrapped in our Maasai blankets, under a vast starlit sky.

Extreme Expedition Tours was founded to bring back the golden age of safari where days pass slowly, where you spend more time in each remote location to embrace a vast canvas of breathtaking landscapes on which you will weave a rich tapestry of everlasting memories. Every experience counts — from a misty dawn game drive to the moment you return to camp, where the familiar and smiling faces of the crew welcome you home with a hot towel and a refreshing drink, eagerly waiting to hear your stories.

You cannot rush such moments; nature requires time to take deep root in your consciousness. These long-forgotten safaris were crafted by skilled and knowledgeable outfitters, often individuals who became part of history and the fabric of Africa. The word safari is Swahili for journey — and so by definition the true spirit of a safari is found in the journey itself.
